"Never let the odds keep you from pursuing what you know in your heart you were meant to do."

-Leroy Robert "Satchel" Paige (1906-82)

St. Anselm's Abbey School offers a rigorous and comprehensive athletic program to all its students. As part of the regular curriculum, all students participate in Physical Education classes. Forms A through IV (grades 6 through 10) have six periods of structured physical activity each week, including intramural competitions.

Members of Forms V and VI (grades 11 and 12) are required to play one sport at the varsity level each year, or engage in a suitable equivalent. There are also all-school field days and two annual three-mile races. At all grade levels, our students participate in a variety of interscholastic sports. Each season a student may choose either a team sport (soccer in autumn, basketball in winter, baseball in spring) or
an individual sport (cross country in autumn, wrestling in winter, tennis or track in spring).

"The quality of a person's life is in direct proportion to their commitment to excellence, regardless of their chosen field of endeavor."

-Vince Lombardi

As a small school, St. Anselm's can give nearly all who want to participate the opportunity to do so--and do so quite well! Our soccer, basketball, and baseball teams compete at the varsity, junior varsity, and middle school levels; students in all grades are eligible for the cross country, wrestling, tennis, and track teams. Given this structure, it is not unusual for a student to earn two or even three varsity letters in one school year.

St. Anselm's athletes have distinguished themselves both on and off the playing fields, earning all-metropolitan, all-league, and all-academic honors. Our athletes have gone on to compete at the collegiate level as well, playing for such schools as the Catholic University, Gettysburg College, College of William and Mary, the University of Virginia, Colgate University, and Amherst, Williams, and Haverford Colleges.

Besides pride, loyalty, discipline, heart, and mind, confidence is the key to all the locks.

-Joe Paterno

St. Anselm's soccer, cross country, basketball, baseball, tennis, and track teams all compete in the Potomac Valley Athletic Conference (PVAC). The wrestling team competes with comparable teams on an independent basis.

St. Anselm's has some of the finest athletic facilities in the PVAC In addition to our superb tennis facility and new baseball diamond, we have a state-of-the-art gymnasium.

I firmly believe that any man's finest hour, the greatest fulfillment of all that he holds dear, is that
moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field
of battle - victorious.

-Vince Lombardi

The St. Anselm's Invitational Basketball Tournament, held annually since 1946, is the oldest continuously running tournament of its kind in the city, if not the country. We also host an autumn invitational soccer tournament for varsity and middle school, as well as the cross-country league championship meet.
