About The School

St. Anselm's Abbey School, located in Washington, D.C., is a private, Catholic school for young men in grades 6
through 12. The school was founded in 1942 by the monks of St. Anselm's Abbey, a Benedictine monastery that had been founded in 1924 by members of the Order of St. Benedict under the auspices of Fort Augustus Abbey in Scotland.

The Benedictines have been educators for almost 1,500 years. Since St. Anselm's first class graduated from the school in 1946, some 1,100 students followed, going on to continue their education in many of the nation's finest and most selective colleges and universities.

We are a small school, with 242 students currently enrolled for the 2007-2008 school year. Our small size allows for classes with no more than 25 students, thus creating an intense and intimate educational experience for each.

Our faculty-student ratio is also excellent - about one teacher for every five students. That way, each student at St. Anselm's is given more individual attention than he might have been given elsewhere.

Our small size does not, however, reduce the number of classes we offer. The school and monastic buildings are situated on a hill surrounded by 40 acres of woodland in Northeast Washington, D.C.

Thanks to this extensive buffer, the campus has the tranquility of a school located in the country while still enjoying the many benefits of an urban location. The school is easily accessible via the local public transportation system. From the Fort Totten subway station on the Red and Green lines, both the E2 and the E4 buses will transport you directly to St. Anselm's in a matter of minutes.

St. Anselm's offers a wide range of classes, clubs and activities, which includes:

Visual Arts - In both Middle and Upper School, the art program forms an integral part of the curriculum. By focusing on the fundamentals of art and drawing and advanced studio art.

Performing Arts - St. Anselm’s performing arts program encompasses both music and theater.

Retreats - One of the key components of the St. Anselm’s experience is the class spirit that brings students together. To this end, the retreat program is an important foundation at every grade level.

Service - Respect for the dignity of each person as created by God is central to the teachings of St. Benedict and serves as the cornerstone of the values that are fostered throughout our school community. The Upper Division weekly service program is uniquely suited to foster the values of a Benedictine education.

Student Government - The St. Anselm’s Student Government provides our young men the opportunity to enhance their leadership skills while working to make the school a place where students can have a true personal investment in the success of student life.

Middle School Government -In the Middle School, distinct opportunities exist for leadership. The Middle School Student Government is composed of a governor, lieutenant governor and two represen-
tatives from each Middle School Form.

Clubs and Activities - Working with faculty advisors, students run and direct the activities for clubs such as the Cultural Student Organization, It's Academic, and Model U.N., just to name a few.
