Students have been playing chess at lunchtime and after school at St. Anselm's since the days when it was still called the Priory School. Abbey students Ryan Montesi ('15) and Jonathan Lorentz ('15) helped found an official chess club in 2013. The club hosts regular events, most importantly an All-School Tournament held in March. The club also inaugurated an Invitational Chess Tournament, now held annually in January and featuring chess teams from local private and public high schools. In April 2015, a team of chess players from the Abbey Chess Club won the team championship trophy at the annual DCSAA chess championship.

Join the Club
Students interested in joining chess club should enroll in the Abbey Chess team on Lichess (https://lichess.org/team/abbey-chess). The Lichess team is open only to students currently enrolled at St. Anselm's. During the period of distance learning, all chess club events are taking place online.
